I was a Wall Street wizard

My fortune’s vanished in thin air:
I don’t even know
if I have still got a house
Happy shoppers pass me by
smiling as they go,
some kids are playing in the snow.

I walked all down 6th avenue
like I was in a trance,
now I’ve got to take a pause.
My arms are badly aching,
so I drop this stupid box

Il mio personale contributo al genere natalizio è datato 2008; lo scrissi con in mente il crollo di Lehman Brothers, e la conseguente crisi dei mutui subprime.
Sul momento voleva essere solo un brano ironico, dal taglio semiserio, sulla vicenda di uno yuppie trovatosi all’improvviso senza lavoro.
Negli anni, tuttavia, con il drammatico acuirsi della forbice sociale nel mondo occidentale, la canzone ha assunto una valenza un po’ tetra, e nel nostro spettacolo suona un po’ come la profezia del dickensiano fantasma del Natale futuro.
Così è diventata l’occasione per un breve momento di riflessione politica all’interno dello show: il manifesto delle renne per la fine del neoliberismo e l’avvento di una nuova socialdemocrazia di stampo keynesiano.
