Gambian griot Jabel Kanuteh and Italian percussionist Marco Zanotti have been playing together as a duo since 2018, releasing two albums: Freedom of movement (2020) and Are you strong? (2022) and one single We want to dance (2021)
The dialogue between the kora and the drums is the core of the music of the duo, enriched by Kanuteh's vocals and Zanotti's mbira and percussions, offering a large spectrum of possibilities specially in the live sessions, which turn out unique music affairs with the audience, whether it might be in a jazz festival, an underground club or a social happening.
Starting from the mandengue tradition, of which the Kanuteh family is ambassador, the duo moves towards a universal music that has assimilated Fela Kuti as well as some of the contemporary currents coming from Africa and its diaspora.
Special guests are often invited, both in recording sessions and live performances, among them Paolo Angeli, Stefano Pilia, Kalifa Kone, Francesco Guerri and Fabio Mina.
JABEL KANUTEH (Gambia) was born in Tambasansang in 1996. As a child he began to play the kora as a member of the important Kanuteh family of griot, a traditional role that can only be handed down father to son.
In 2014 he left the Gambia and after a long journey through the deserts of Niger, Libya and the Mediterranean Sea, he managed to reach the Italian coasts and settled in Fano, Adriatic Coast.
As a professional musician and following his mission as a griot – cantor and ambassador of peace – he has been invited and participates in festivals such as Fano Jazz, Isole che parlano, Barsento Arte, Festival du Desert, Speaking Islands, The roots in music, Paesaggi Sonori and more. In November 2019 he held a concert at Palazzo del Quirinale with Paolo Angeli for the concerts at the Pauline Chapel.
MARCO ZANOTTI (Italy) plays drums, percussions, mbira and whatever it comes through. He likes to explore many forms of expression in music combining his production with travels, researches and collaborations.
He is the founder and director of Classica Orchestra Afrobeat (three albums feat Seun Kuti, Baba Sissoko, Sekouba Bambino and live exhibition in Glastonbury Festival) and Cucoma Combo. He plays with avantgarde trio Mothra and collaborates with several poliphonic choirs. Also, he gladly comes out of the purely musical perimeter, working with contemporary dance, theater and cinema (Roberto Castello, Magnifico Teatrino Errante, ERT, Pamoja Odyssey) and having translated and curated the Italian edition of Fela Kuti's biography. In 2021 his first solo album Re-flexio has been released, flanked by the works of artist Gaia Carboni.
