I Manta Rays sono un invito a scatenarci trascinando nel presente la palpitante energia, i ritmi stringenti e le melodie distorte di altre epoche musicali. Il loro sound, inventivo senza diventare pretenzioso, immediato ma ricco di riferimenti, afferma e riaggiorna l’inesauribile potere di tre accordi suonati in modo diretto e intorno a questa precisa consapevolezza si sviluppa l’omonimo album di debutto.

Ognuna delle dodici tracce originali ha una propria personalità e si potrebbe ritrovare a proprio agio tra i singoli o i lati B in un classico jukebox. Tuttavia, la coesione e l’intenzione della scrittura rendono l'impressione di una band che frequenta stili e influenze da cui trarre ispirazione senza mai cadere nella trappola del semplice rimaneggiamento, mantenendo invece ben chiara la propria identità musicale attraverso la vasta gamma di generi spremuta nei 45 minuti del disco, si tratti di garage, punk, soul, surf o power pop.

Con l’orecchio alle opere seminali di gruppi come gli Who, i Velvet Underground, gli Stooges o i Clash, tutte accomunate da una certa ingegnosa semplicità, un’immediatezza messa a nudo che prende l'ascoltatore alle viscere, "Manta Rays" è un esordio classico che intende in primo luogo ricordarci il motivo per cui amiamo tanto questa cosa chiamata Rock'n'Roll.

Manta Rays drag the throbbing energy, hip shakin’ rhythms and fuzzed-out melodies of another musical era kicking and screaming into the present. Inventive and unpretentious, fresh yet informed, their sound is a modern day affirmation of the power of three chords and the truth, and it’s with this same discernment that they have put together their eponymous full-length debut album.
Every one of the record’s twelve original compositions stands alone and could easily grace the A or B-side of a classic jukebox 45. However, there is a cohesion and sense of purpose to the songwriting that gives the impression of a band that have succeeded in establishing their own musical identity, expanding upon the styles and influences from which they draw inspiration yet without falling into the trap of simply rehashing any one of the broad range of genres squeezed into its 45 minutes, be it garage punk, soul, surf or power pop.
In the same way that the seminal works of groups like The Who, The Velvets, The Stooges and The Clash all embody a certain ingenious simplicity, a stripped down directness that draws the listener in and connects with them on an almost visceral level, “Manta Rays” is a classic debut that serves as a short sharp reminder of why we love this thing called Rock’n’Roll in the first place.
