September 11, 1840

In summer's mellow midnight,
A cloudless moon shone through
Our open parlour window,
And rose-trees wet with dew.

I sat in silent musing;
The soft wind waved my hair;
It told me heaven was glorious,
And sleeping earth was fair.

I needed not its breathing
To bring such thoughts to me;
But still it whispered lowly,
How dark the woods will be!

"The thick leaves in my murmur
Are rustling like a dream,
And all their myriad voices
Instinct with spirit seem."

I said, "Go, gentle singer,
Thy wooing voice is kind:
But do not think its music
Has power to reach my mind.

"Play with the scented flower,
The young tree's supple bough,
And leave my human feelings
In their own course to flow."

The wanderer would not heed me;
Its kiss grew warmer still.
"O come!" it sighed so sweetly;
"I'll win thee 'gainst thy will.

"Were we not friends from childhood?
Have I not loved thee long?
As long as thou, the solemn night,
Whose silence wakes my song.

"And when thy heart is resting
Beneath the church-aisle stone,
I shall have time for mourning,
And THOU for being alone."

Era una mite mezzanotte estiva,
una luna limpida riluceva attraverso
la finestra aperta del salottino

Sedevo silenziosa e assorta,
il vento soffice mi scombinava i capelli:

Che la Terra appisolata era buona.

Non avevo bisogno del suo alito

eppure bisbigliava piano,
“Pensa quant’è buio il bosco!

“Se solo mormoro, le foglie spesse
frusciano come in un sogno,
e hanno miriadi di voci
che paiono animate d’istinti”.

Gli dissi, “Va’, nobile cantore,
la tua voce seducente è dolce,
ma non t’illudere, questa musica
non ha il potere di prendermi la mente.

“Gioca con i fiori profumati,
con i rami docili degli arboscelli,
e lascia che i miei sentimenti
seguano il loro corso umano”.

Ma il peregrino non mi dava pace;
il suo bacio si fece anche più caldo –
“Su, vieni”, sospirava dolcemente,
“Sarai mia, che tu lo voglia o no.

“Non siamo amici dall’infanzia?
Non ti amo già da molto tempo?
Da quando tu hai amato la notte
il cui silenzio risveglia il mio canto.

“E quando il tuo cuore sarà adagiato
sotto la lapide di un cimitero
avrò tutto il tempo di rimpiangerti
e tu di stare sola”.
